Eligibility
Candidates from any Mayo Clinic site and any department or division are eligible to apply for Benefactor-Funded Research Established-Investigator Career Awards. These awards are restricted to individuals holding either an M.D., or an M.D. and Ph.D., or an equivalent medical degree, with an investigative focus in translational research.
Research expertise
Eligible candidates should have a demonstrated record of original contributions to research in their current fields. Documentation would include significant peer-reviewed publications, extramural research funding and service as a mentor in their scientific area of expertise.
Career stage
Eligible candidates for Benefactor-Funded Established Career Development Awards must hold one of the following appointments as of Jan. 1, 2025:
- Associate consultant.
- Senior associate consultant.
- Consultant.
Individuals are not eligible if, as of Jan. 1, 2025, they hold the position of research fellow, research scientist, research associate, research fellow, Mayo Clinic Scholar, resident or clinical fellow.
Previous funding
Applicants should have a track record of serving as a principal investigator of external funding of any type in their current research field.
Benefactor engagement
Award recipients will identify themselves as "Chen Scholars" in academic and scientific papers, articles, publications, presentations, and similar settings during the duration of their award where possible. Mayo Clinic Chen Scholars will be expected to provide periodic progress reports and participate in person or virtually in an annual symposium — a gathering of Chen recipients from peer healthcare institutions identified by the benefactors.
